The South Carolina football program is set to play the toughest schedule in the nation in 2023, and the toughest game on that schedule is the annual matchup with the Georgia Bulldogs. The 2023 chapter of the rivalry will be played between the hedges at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia and will take place on September 16th.
Now, more details have emerged about the week 3 matchup. South Carolina and Georgia will play at 3:30 on CBS as the SEC Game of the Week. This will be South Carolina’s first time playing on CBS since losing to Alabama at home in 2019 when Will Muschamp roamed the Carolina sideline.
South Carolina has a losing record on CBS in their history but has also picked up one of the program’s signature wins on the network (a 35-21 beatdown of #1 Alabama at Williams-Brice Stadium). While that game was at the friendly confines of home, the Gamecocks will take the show on the road for their latest CBS experience.
While most understand that Georgia is the toughest opponent for South Carolina this fall, the rivalry game is expected to be one of the Bulldogs’ hardest games, as well. Georgia plays Tennessee on the road, but the two-time defending national champions do not have a home contest more difficult than the team’s matchup with the Gamecocks in Athens.
The last time Georgia lost in Athens was also the last time South Carolina football knocked off the Bulldogs. In 2019, the 4-win Gamecocks picked up one of their victories on the road in Athens, giving Georgia their only loss of the regular season
Georgia is one of only two SEC East programs that Shane Beamer has yet to beat since coming becoming the South Carolina football headman before the 2021 season. Beamer is 2-0 against Vanderbilt, 1-1 against Florida, Tennessee, and Kentucky, and 0-2 against Missouri and Georgia.
