The transfer portal is still a whirlwind of daily news, both “real news” and “fake news.” Much like high school recruiting, for some players, no reporting seems like enough as they appear to have a new leader each time the sun rises. For others, the transfer destination seems picked out before the player ever enters the portal. And still, for others, no news surfaces at all until the player makes a public commitment. The South Carolina football team has been involved with all sorts of players in the transfer portal. The Gamecocks have landed some and missed out on others.

On Thursday, wide receiver transfer Keon Coleman announced his commitment after entering the portal from Michigan State University.

Coleman, viewed by many as the top player left in the transfer portal, announced via his personal Twitter account a commitment to Florida State and head coach Mike Norvell.

Coleman was a bit of a longshot target for South Carolina football, but the talented receiver did show some interest in the Gamecocks, and that interest appeared to be mutual.

Thanks to the return of Antwane “Juice” Wells, the Carolina offense did not have a need for a #1 receiver, but Shane Beamer and his staff would have gladly taken a second top-tier playmaker on the outside if they could have landed him.

Coleman’s second recruitment was both wildly in the public eye and surprisingly secretive. Small bits of information leaked out almost every day, but nothing substantial came out until shortly before he pledged his services to the Seminoles. South Carolina, Ole Miss, Auburn, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, and Maryland were some of the teams that missed out on Coleman.

The Gamecocks are still in on a few transfer portal players. The roster still needs a running back and could still add an offensive lineman or defensive end.
