The transfer portal has seen thousands of players across the country transfer from one program to another. One of the most common positions for transfers is quarterback as only one quarterback is on the field at a time. For South Carolina football, one of the team’s reserve quarterbacks entered his name into the transfer portal in April.

Braden Davis, a former 4-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting class, saw the writing on the wall at South Carolina with incumbent starter Spencer Rattler returning for another season in Columbia and true freshman LaNorris Sellers seeming like the quarterback of the future after wowing the coaching staff since enrolling early this January.

Davis officially entered the transfer portal in April during the underclassmen spring transfer portal window. He was viewed as being behind at least three other quarterbacks (Rattler, Sellers, and Tanner Bailey) on the depth chart for the 2023 season and, potentially, was also behind versatile playmaker and former quarterback Dakereon Joyner. On Thursday, the talented Davis announced he had found his new home through the portal.

Davis, in an announcement via his personal Twitter account, made known that he has committed to Syracuse and head coach Dino Babers. Current Syracuse starter (and former South Carolina recruiting target) Garrett Shrader only has one year of collegiate eligibility remaining, and Davis is the highest-rated quarterback on the roster based on recruiting ranking out of high school, so playing time could be in his future.

In a bit of irony, the Gamecocks had, just minutes earlier, secured a commitment from Syracuse defensive end transfer Jatius Geer. Geer entered the transfer portal just two weeks ago during the underclassmen spring transfer portal window. The Orange and the Gamecocks essentially traded two young players from their rosters. However, unlike Davis, Geer saw the field at Syracuse and actually started for most of the season in 2022.
