South Carolina Football: CBS puts Gamecocks in preseason top-25
By Kevin Miller
Last week, CBS Sports released their annual post-spring preseason top-25 for college football. The national outlet’s Dennis Dodd was the lead analyst on the poll, and it was CBS’ first poll since the “way too early” poll from right after the end of the 2022 season. The South Carolina football program made an appearance in the CBS poll.
The rankings are, as follows, with the previous “way too early” rankings in parentheses:
- Georgia Bulldogs (1)
- Michigan Wolverines (2)
- Ohio State Buckeyes (3)
- Penn State Nittany Lions (7)
- Washington Huskies (5)
- Alabama Crimson Tide (4)
- Florida State Seminoles (14)
- LSU Tigers (8)
- Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10)
- Clemson Tigers (9)
- Oregon Ducks (11)
- Kansas State Wildcats (19)
- Southern Cal Trojans (13)
- Utah Utes (18)
- Oregon State Beavers (15)
- Tennessee Volunteers (16)
- Texas Longhorns (17)
- North Carolina Tar Heels (20)
- Wisconsin Badgers (Unranked)
- South Carolina Gamecocks (22)
- UCLA Bruins (23)
- TCU Horned Frogs (6)
- Ole Miss Rebels (21)
- Tulane Green Wave (12)
- Oklahoma Sooners (25)
For the Gamecocks, the 20th ranking is similar to how many outlets view the South Carolina program heading into the 2023 season. Considering South Carolina is replacing 4 NFL players and 2 transfer portal departures on defense, has a brand new offensive coordinator and offensive system, and has no running backs with real experience, #20 is not bad at all. If the Gamecocks can clean up some holes and provide solid answers to these big-time questions, a huge season could be coming for the garnet and black team from the Palmetto State.
One additional difficulty for the Gamecocks is their #1 strength of schedule. Georgia (1), Clemson (10), Tennessee (16), and North Carolina (18) are all in CBS’ post-spring poll, and Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Florida, and Kentucky have made appearances in other top-25 polls from different outlets this offseason. The Gamecocks will be a good team in 2023, and their schedule will be a large test.
