South Carolina Football’s Most Impressive 2023 Spring Performers:
Defensive End Tyreek Johnson

Tyreek Johnson is an older player in the South Carolina football program, but he has very little experience in games. Most of this is because of injury as Johnson has had a difficult time staying healthy. If Johnson can head into the 2023 season healthy, he could see a lot of playing time as the Gamecocks are very thin at defensive end. Only one player at the position returns with much experience, but Jordan Strachan also is coming off of a torn ACL.

Johnson has had a solid spring, but he is also healthy, making this a successful offseason so far. He was selected as the defensive recipient of the Gamecock Toughness award. If Johnson’s toughness and health can last, the defense might be able to keep some of their athletic defensive tackles (like TJ Sanders, Tonka Hemingway, and Elijah Davis) from having to slide outside.
