South Carolina Football: Transfer portal is closed; Scholarship count update

With new redshirt rules, the transfer portal, and the 2020 “Covid redshirt,” keeping track of football scholarships is difficult. South Carolina football, like every other program, has 85 scholarships to utilize, and the numbers on seem to be changing constantly. The transfer portal spring window has now closed, meaning that no more underclassmen can enter their names into the portal without a waiver from the NCAA. Players already in the portal can still transfer, and graduate students can enter the transfer portal and transfer at any time.

There are 70 scholarship players already on the South Carolina football roster, including transfers and true freshmen who have already enrolled. There are also 12 players from the 2023 recruiting class who will enroll this summer. Assuming there will not be a return from suspended freshmen Monteque Rhames and Cameron Upshaw, this leaves the Gamecocks with three more scholarships to allocate to potential transfer portal targets or to reward a walk-on. Carolina is expected to try to bring in a running back and EDGE (preferably a hand-in-the-dirt defensive end) in the portal.
