South Carolina Basketball: Gamecock transfer announces new home
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina basketball had five players leave the program through the transfer portal. Chico Carter, Jr., a grad student with one more year of eligibility, left the team despite leading the SEC in 3-point percentage last season. On Tuesday, it was announced that Carter has decided on his new home. According to college basketball pundit Jon Rothstein, Chico Carter, Jr. will play his final year of eligibility in Chicago at DePaul.
Carter, Jr. is expected to compete for a starting role in the Blue Demon backcourt in the 2023-2024 season. His fifth season in college basketball will be with his third team as, prior to playing two seasons with the Gamecocks, Carter, Jr. spent two years playing at Murray State.
Another former Gamecock has made his transfer decision known, as well. Big man Tre-Vaughn Minott, the first player to enter the portal this offseason, is on the Portland State roster. Fellow forwards Javon Benson and Daniel Hankins-Sanford have not found new homes as of today, and neither has walk-on combo guard Ford Cooper. None of the transfers other than Carter, Jr. played many minutes last season, and Minott, Benson, and Cooper did not seem to factor into any future plans, either.
The Gamecocks have added three players through the transfer portal, as well. Guard Ta’Lon Cooper (Minnesota), power forward Stephen Clark (The Citadel), and combo forward Myles Stute (Vanderbilt) all have signed with the South Carolina basketball program. Lamont Paris and his staff are also in on some other transfer portal targets, namely forward BJ Mack (Wofford). Mack is set to announce his decision on May 4th after shutting down his recruitment after returning home from his on-campus visit to South Carolina last weekend.
