The South Carolina football team lost a number of players to the transfer portal during the first transfer window of the 2022-2023 offseason. Players like MarShawn Lloyd, Jaheim Bell, and Jordan Burch were among the twelve scholarship athletes to transfer from the South Carolina football program during the winter window. The Gamecocks also brought in a number of new players, headlined by tight ends Trey Knox and Joshua Simon.

Over the weekend, the Gamecocks had their first defection of the spring transfer portal window. (Technically, defensive back Anthony Rose already hit the portal, but he was suspended and unlikely to return). According to On3’s Transfer Portal Wire, reserve offensive lineman Colin Henrich, son of former Gamecock center Chuck Henrich, entered his name into the transfer portal after not seeing any action in 2022. Henrich redshirted in 2021 but won the team’s Offensive Scout Team Award that year.

With the Gamecocks likely in the market for a few transfers (especially at EDGE and running back) and with the roster containing a surplus of scholarship players at certain positions (especially quarterback), it is expected that a few more players will transfer out of the program in the next week. The portal closes again on April 30th. Any player already in the portal will still have the opportunity to transfer, but no players will still be able to enter the portal after that date. Graduate students are the exception to these rules as they can enter the transfer portal at any time.

Almost 1300 players entered their names into football’s version of the transfer portal during the winter window, and over 3000 players entered the portal during the entire 2021-2022 offseason. This spring window seems like it will be a busy one, as well.
