The South Carolina Athletics Department and the Athletics Department at Clemson compete every year in what is known as the Palmetto Series. Essentially, every varsity sports matchup between the two rivals in an academic year has a “point” up for grabs. The winner of the football game gets a point, the winner of the baseball series gets a point, and so on for the entire academic year. Also, the athletic department with the most Palmetto Fellows Scholarship recipients, most Life Scholarship recipients, and most Rivals Play Second-Chance Promotion entries gets a point.

It is important to note that some varsity sports are played at South Carolina but are not played at Clemson, and some varsity sports are played at Clemson but are not played at South Carolina. There have also been some seasons in which the two teams in a particular sport do not have a scheduled matchup (like 2022-2023 women’s golf). Postseason matchups do not count toward the Palmetto Series, but there were no postseason matchups in the 2022-2023 year.

Continuing its dominance, the University of South Carolina Athletics Department beat Clemson again in the 2022-2023 Palmetto Series. During the 2022-2023 school year, South Carolina won the Palmetto Series by a score of 8-5, with a sweep of the four “major” sports of football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and baseball (series).

South Carolina won Palmetto Series points for wins in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball (series), women’s cross country, men’s tennis, Life Scholarships, and the Rival Play Promotion. Clemson won Palmetto Series points for softball (series), men’s soccer, women’s tennis, volleyball, and Palmetto Fellows Scholarships. The women’s soccer game ended in a 2-2 draw, so no points were awarded in that matchup.

Carolina has never lost the Palmetto Series.
