South Carolina Football: 4-star defensive back enters transfer portal
By Kevin Miller
In February, the South Carolina football team was shaken up by a minor scandal. Three freshmen defensive players (redshirt freshman Anthony Rose, true freshman Monteque Rhames, and true freshman Cameron Upshaw were all suspended from the team and University indefinitely and booked on charges related to a weapon in their shared dorm. All three players are in separate circumstances regarding their legal, academic, and athletic statuses.
Rose was in his second year in the program but did not see the field in year 1 while he made academic progress. Rhames was highly recruited out of high school and would have had a real chance to play in the defensive end rotation this season had he progressed well. Upshaw was a developmental defensive back from Florida.
In recent weeks, Head Coach Shane Beamer has repeatedly been asked about the three suspended players. Each time, Beamer responded that the players were not part of the football program and would not be for a long time, if they would ever be at all. No further details regarding the three players’ futures had come to light. This changed over the weekend.
Anthony Rose made an announcement via his Twitter account that he would be putting his name into the transfer portal.
In his announcement, Rose made no mention of his suspension, legal troubles, or the fact that he has been away from the team. The former 4-star defensive back prospect originally hails from Miami, Florida.
Rose entered the transfer portal the day it reopened for underclassmen (Saturday) and is eligible to enroll at a new school and join a new team, pending the new school’s handling of his legal issue. As of now, there have not been any further details regarding the charges pending against him.
