South Carolina Football: Three Gamecocks selected for membership in scholar-athlete society
By Kevin Miller
On Wednesday, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame (known as the NFF) announced that three South Carolina football players were selected as members of the 2023 chapter of the NFF Hampshire Honors Society. Offensive lineman Jovaughn Gwyn, defensive end/EDGE Tyreek Johnson, and offensive lineman Tyshawn Wannamaker were picked as part of a record group of 1734 players inducted across all levels of college football.
In order to be inducted into the NFF Hampshire Honors Society, a player must have a GPA that never dipped below 3.2 at any point during their college career, a player must be a graduating or rising senior who has been out of high school at least three years, a player must have been a contributor on the field the previous season, and a player must receive an official nomination from his team and coaching staff.
Johnson and Wannamaker will be part of the 2023 Gamecock roster. Johnson is fighting for a rotation spot at a depleted defensive end position, while Wannamaker seems poised to start on the offensive line, probably at right tackle. Johnson has already graduated, and Wannamaker is a rising senior this year.
Gwyn finished his Gamecock career this past season after spending most of four years starting at guard. After a strong performance at the 2023 Reese’s Senior Bowl and a good showing at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, he is projected to be a late round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft this April.
Last season, the South Carolina football team also saw three players inducted as linebacker Spencer Eason-Riddle, kicker Parker White, and tight end Nick Muse were honored as 2022 NFF Hampshire Honors Society members.
