South Carolina Football: Josiah Thompson is announcing Friday; How should Gamecock fans feel about their chances?
By Kevin Miller
2024 recruiting season is heating up. Recruits from all over the country want to have their minds made up and decisions finalized before they start their senior high school football seasons. For many of them, the spring semester (from January to May) of their junior year is decision time. This has been the case for South Carolina football commitments Kam Pringle, Mazeo Bennett, Wendell Gregory, Michael Smith, and Blake Franks. It also seems to be true for Dillon High School’s Josiah Thompson.
Thompson, a potential 5-star offensive tackle, made an announcement last month that he knew where he would play at the next level. A couple of weeks later, he announced his decision date (April 11th). However, a few days later, that date was changed to the 14th as Friday worked better for his family than Tuesday.
Well, the 14th is just three days away, and South Carolina football fans are eager to see if they land the highly-touted Thompson. He has long been considered a Gamecock lean, but Carolina fans can be a bit pessimistic when it comes to good things happening to them and their team.
While nothing is ever set in stone in recruiting, South Carolina fans should rest easy with this one. Thompson is as close to a Gamecock lock as is possible, and Friday’s announcement should be a positive one for the home-state program. The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine has Thompson having a 96.6% chance of ending up in Columbia.
Head Coach Shane Beamer announced two #WelcomeHome commitments two weeks ago, but only Blake Franks’ commitment has been revealed. Many who follow recruiting speculate that Thompson is the second.
Thompson’s official final-6 (and, presumably, the teams who are technically still in the running for his services) are South Carolina, Clemson, Miami, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama.
Gamecock fans won’t have long to wait on Friday as Thompson is set to make his announcement at 9:00 AM.
