South Carolina Basketball: Top in-state target earns high honor
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina basketball just finished up a tough 2022-2023 season. The Gamecocks tied the program record for losses with 21, and the roster doesn’t have a ton of SEC-level talent. With Hayden Brown graduating and GG Jackson likely heading to the NBA, Lamont Paris’ team will also have to replace two of its three leading scorers.
A key piece in rebuilding the roster could be in South Carolina’s backyard. Lexington High School’s Cam Scott is a priority target for Lamont Paris and his staff. Scott is a 6’5 wing who possesses real athleticism and can shoot the basketball from anywhere on the court. He excels at gaining separation from his defender to give himself enough room to make even the most difficult of shots. His shot-making has translated to him becoming the leading scorer in Lexington High School history, despite him having another year in high school.
Scott was just honored with a big-time award this week. He was named the Gatorade South Carolina Boys Basketball Player of the Year for his efforts on the court as he has averaged over 15 points per game every season since joining the varsity team in the eighth grade. The shooting guard will surely continue to rack in more accolades as he still has another year left to play. His offer list includes the “whos-who” of college basketball, including teams from all over the country. Scott is a consensus top-40 recruit and is considered a five-star by some recruiting rankings.
Any team would be fortunate to land Scott’s talents, but he is a uniquely perfect fit for the South Carolina roster. A scoring wing is something every basketball team needs, and South Carolina basketball is no exception. Local kids also have historically been the driving forces behind recent South Carolina success as names like Sindarius Thornwell, PJ Dozier, Tony Kitchings, BJ McKie, Melvin Watson, and Carlos Powell were in-state players who became instrumental pieces on 20-game winning teams.
As of now, Scott has set no timeline for a commitment.
