Here is the biggest South Carolina Gamecocks News from the weekend, starting with the women’s basketball team.

On Senior Day, the South Carolina basketball team overcame a tough shooting day from their guards to defeat the Georgia Bulldogs 73-63. Aliyah Boston and Kamilla Cardoso had double-doubles, and Boston scored 25 to lead the way. The Gamecocks were presented with their SEC regular season championship trophy and will be rewarded with a double-bye in the SEC Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina.

The South Carolina men’s basketball team lost in a blowout to Tennessee.

After weeks of solid progress, the men’s basketball team got hammered by the Volunteers on the road. The home team allowed very few good looks to the Gamecocks, and Zakai Zeigler led the way for the Vols en route to an absurd 29-4 assist-to-turnover ratio for the game. South Carolina couldn’t score and gave up down the stretch of the 85-45 shellacking.

The South Carolina football team’s schedule is the toughest in the nation.

Phil Steele compiled the numbers for every division-1 team in the nation and showed that the South Carolina Gamecocks’ schedule in 2023 is more difficult than any other schedule based on opponents’ win % from a season ago. The Gamecocks’ 2023 opponents won 66% of their games last year. The rest of the top-13 in opponents’ win % were between 60% and 62.7%.

The baseball team remains undefeated with a series sweep of the Penn Quakers.

In sad news, the YardCocks’ streak of double-digit scoring efforts ended this weekend against Penn. In fact, they failed to score 10 runs in any of the three contests against the Quakers. The good news is that the Gamecocks swept the series anyway, winning 7-4, 1-0, and 6-5. After a mid-week matchup with North Carolina A&T on Tuesday, the Gamecocks will face off with the Clemson Tigers next weekend for the annual rivalry series.

Speaking of baseball, Ethan Petry was named a national player of the week.

True freshman Ethan Petry has had an incredible first two weeks of his collegiate career as he is tied for 5th nationally in home runs (along with teammate Gavin Casas). On Monday, college baseball outlet Baseballnews.com named Petry one of the national players of the week. He went 7-17 with 4 home runs and 9 RBI, including the game’s only run in a 1-0 victory during South Carolina’s second victory of their sweep over Penn this weekend.

South Carolina softball stayed red-hot.

The softball team added six more victories to their ledger last week, including five over the weekend. The Gamecocks outscored their opponents 60-10 over the six games and have now won 14 in a row to bring their season mark to 14-1.
