Here is the South Carolina Gamecocks News from the week, starting with another championship for Dawn Staley and the women’s basketball team.
With Thursday night’s victory against Tennessee, South Carolina basketball secured its seventh women’s SEC regular season championship of the last ten years. The 73-60 victory extended their school record to 34 straight victories. The quest for perfection continues with the regular season finale against the Georgia Bulldogs.
Aliyah Boston and GG Jackson signed big NIL deals this week.
The two Gamecock stars signed deals with Under Armour to release replica jerseys with their names and numbers on them. Thanks to current NIL guidelines, the athletes will be able to profit from the sale of these jerseys.
The South Carolina men’s basketball team almost knocked off Alabama at CLA.
In a game that went to overtime, the Gamecocks were just inches away from victory as a desperation shot from halfcourt rimmed out at the final buzzer. The halfcourt offense was much improved for the Gamecocks during the game as GG Jackson, Meechie Johnson, and Jacobi Wright led the way in scoring. The men will take on Tennessee in Knoxville on Saturday.
A non-conference basketball matchup against Virginia Tech was announced this week.
Lamont Paris’ team will make the drive up I-77 to Charlotte in November to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies as part of a doubleheader that will also include a matchup between Virginia and Florida.
The South Carolina baseball team is bullying other teams.
After trouncing UMass-Lowell over the weekend by a combined score of 49-5, the Gamecock bats stayed hot during the mid-week. The Gamecocks crushed Winthrop 19-3 and blanked Queens 12-0. Still leading the nation in home runs and demolishing scoring records, the YardCocks have scored in double figures in all five games this season and are averaging 15 runs a game. True freshman Eli Jerzembeck and junior James Hicks started the two mid-week contests and both pitched very well.
Clemson self-reported NCAA rules violations to The State newspaper this week.
The Athletics Department from that team in the upstate of South Carolina self-reported 11 NCAA rules violations during the last calendar year. Four of these infractions involved football recruiting. The NCAA has decided not to hand down any punishment on the Tigers.
Gamecock women’s tennis player Ayana Akli received an SEC honor.
Akli was honored as the women’s athlete of the week for the conference after a dominant week of tennis. She swept her individual matchups against Coastal Carolina, Yale, and Wake Forest, including not losing a set against Coastal or Yale. She also participated in two doubles victories on the week. This is Akli’s second time being honored with a conference player of the week award this season.
