South Carolina is an excellent defensive team. With ten different players averaging at least half a steal per game, they force turnovers on 22.2% of their opponent’s possessions and rank 32nd nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency, per Bart Torvik.
Their issues are on the other end of the court, where they rank 259th in 2-point shooting and 273rd in 3-point shooting. Unfortunately, they turn the ball over just as often as they force other teams to, with the same 22.2% turnover rate on offense that they have on defense. Against a Vanderbilt team that forces turnovers on 23.3% of opponent’s possessions, that could spell trouble.
The Commodores don’t have the offense to make the Gamecocks pay, however, as they’re ranked 193rd in 2-point shooting and a dreadful 293d in 3-point shooting. Those offensive warts have reared their head recently, as Vanderbilt has covered just once in their last five games, al hitting the under in four straight.
South Carolina has been a menace as a home favorite this year. They’ve covered the spread five of their last six as a home favorite by an average of 10.1 points. Their offense just clicks at home, averaging 80.1 points per game, good for 10 points higher than their average on the season. South Carolina already has an away win over Vanderbilt this year too, winning 72-70 earlier this month in a game in which they were 8.5-point underdogs.
I like the Gamecocks to build on their victory over Georgia and move to 9-2 at home. Give me South Carolina -1.5 as my best bet in this one.
