South Carolina Football Players Recruiting 5-Star WR

The South Carolina football team made an early splash in the transfer portal by landing a pair of former Oklahoma Sooners this past December. Those were Heisman candidate quarterback Spencer Rattler and his all-conference tight end Austin Stogner.

The Gamecock coaching staff is still on the hunt to add talented pass catchers in the portal, and it looks like they’ve got the help of a few players on the recruiting trail.

It was announced yesterday that former five-star wide receiver Mario Williams will be leaving the Oklahoma program in search of a new home in the 2022 season. With the announcement going public on social media, a couple of members on the Gamecocks’ roster chimed in to try and sway the talented pass catcher to join them in Columbia.

Not surprisingly, one of those players was Spencer Rattler, his former teammate with the Sooners. The two played together for the 2021 campaign before Rattler’s decision to move on from the program.

After the initial post, more Gamecocks decided to make their pitch. One was Jaheim Bell, who’s fresh off of a career game in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

Williams was the No. 1 wide receiver recruit in the nation for the class of 2021 according to ESPN. As a freshman, he racked up 35 catches for 380 yards and four scores. The majority of that production came with Rattler at the helm. Williams hauled in 20 of his 35 receptions over the first five contests.

Should the Gamecocks land the stud wideout, it would immediately upgrade the receiver room. Williams would factor in as an immediate starter, giving the offense another big play threat.

Williams has not given a timeline for making a decision on his future destination.
