The South Carolina football team has already made a huge splash in the transfer portal this offseason. The Gamecocks signed a former Heisman candidate and his teammate this December prior to close of the Early Recruiting Period.
Those two players were Oklahoma transfers Spencer Rattler and Austin Stogner, both of whom will be expected to make instant impacts on the offense in 2022. Rattler was a five-star prospect before committing to the Sooners out of high school. He has now become the Gamecocks’ highest rated signee of all-time at the position.
His tight end, Stogner, is listed as a four-star transfer after tallying back-to-back all-conference seasons in Norman. He will have an immediate opportunity to fill the shoes of Nick Muse, who’s moving on to the next phase of his career.
Now, Shane Beamer and Co. are hoping to land even more offensive help, and they should know if that help will be coming to Columbia later today.
Jacob Cowing, a wide receiver from UTEP, is announcing his next transfer destination on Monday. That decision will come down to five teams, which include the Gamecocks, Arizona, Florida, LSU, and Oregon.
Cowing would give South Carolina football another weapon
The UTEP pass catcher had a breakout season in 2021, hauling in 69 receptions for 1,354 yards and seven scores. That was an average of nearly 20 yards a catch. Cowing finished the year ranked ninth in the country in receiving and 11th in yards per reception. He tallied eight 100-yard games on the season.
Cowing entered the transfer portal December, last playing in UTEP’s bowl game against Fresno State. His production this year far exceeds that of anyone on the current roster, with the Gamecocks’ leading receiver Josh Vann recording 668 yards through the air.
Over his three-year career, the talented receiver has notched 141 catches for 2,595 yards and 13 touchdowns. Should he land with South Carolina, he would immediately contend for a starting role.
