The South Carolina football program has taken the national media by storm over the last 24 hours. Late last night, it was announced that former five-star signal caller Spencer Rattler would be joining the Gamecocks for the 2022 season. He immediately factors in as a day one starter with an opportunity to improve a South Carolina unit that was one of college football’s worst in terms of scoring.

It’s safe to say the outlook on the team has changed rather quickly.

The Rattler addition now gives the Gamecocks a proven playmaker under center. The Oklahoma transfer entered the 2021 season as the Heisman favorite and a potential first pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

While things didn’t transpire the way Rattler planned, coach Shane Beamer and Co. will welcome the talented passer in with open arms. The recruiting win is giving the Gamecocks a ton of positive national press, but members of the media aren’t the only ones taking note of South Carolina’s most recent addition.

A number of former players have come out in support of the program’s new quarterback as South Carolina alumni look forward to the future. Many played for Beamer while he was an assistant under Steve Spurrier. They’re expectedly excited for their former coach Beamer and the direction of the program he’s building. Take a look at what they have to say.

Rattler comes to Columbia as the highest rated passer in program history. The first five-star quarterback commitment to ever sign with the Gamecocks, he will undoubtedly make the team better in 2022.

Last year with the Sooners, Rattler threw for 1,483 yards on 75% passing. The year prior, he tossed 28 touchdowns and racked up more than 3,000 yards. For perspective, the Gamecocks have had one 3,000-yard passer since 2015.

Rattler brings with him 40 career touchdown completions, nine rushing scores, and a 166.0 overall quarterback rating.

Former Gamecocks are excited about the future. This is just the beginning of what coach Beamer is hoping to accomplish with the South Carolina football program.
