3 bold predictions for South Carolina football
Trick plays galore
As we said earlier, the Gamecocks are going to need to find creative ways to move the ball. It could be on defense, special teams, or through a little trickery on offense. The South Carolina defense got an early dose of this last weekend against East Carolina, as the Pirates opened the game with a 75-yard touchdown on an end around receiver pass. It gave the Pirates life in a game that they weren’t expected to win.
Luckily, the Gamecocks were able to overcome it, but it was certainly a great start for East Carolina. Getting off to a fast start could help take the crowd out of the game in Athens. That crowd will be fired up for a night start in Sanford Stadium for its SEC opener.
Dakereon Joyner should be a player to watch, as he came to South Carolina as a four-star quarterback. Seeing him line up in the wildcat or having him throw a pass on a screen or reverse isn’t out of the question. Quarterback Luke Doty played a little wideout last year, and we could see him being used as a receiving threat with his athleticism out of the backfield. We wouldn’t be surprised to possibly see some two- and three-running back sets as the Gamecocks look to confuse Georgia’s defense.
South Carolina will need help if they hope to pull the upset. The element of surprise could be key.
