South Carolina football: 3 sensational stats from ECU win
By Jacob Elsey
3 sensational stats for South Carolina football.
16.5 yards per catch
The South Carolina passing attack was a bit up and down against East Carolina, as quarterback Zeb Noland completed just 54% of his attempts. Though he connected on just 13 completions, he threw for more than 200 yards.
That total equated to 16.5 yards per catch by Gamecock wide receivers, who hauled in two long passes of 45 yards or more. Vann did the most damage with a five-catch, 116-yard performance. That’s good for 23.2 yards per completion. He racked up receptions of 25, 26, and 45 yards, while also having a 23-yard touchdown catch mysteriously overturned in the second half. Tight end Jaheim Bell hauled in the team’s longest offensive play of the day on a 48-yard seam route.
It was nice for the Gamecocks to see explosive plays despite playing relatively poorly for most of the game offensively. South Carolina’s downfield passing attack was probably the best part of the game plan when Zeb Noland was given enough time to settle in the pocket.
South Carolina will have its hands full along the offensive line with Georgia bringing one of the nation’s top defenses to play next weekend, but if the Gamecocks can find time and continue to push the ball down the field successfully, they could have a puncher’s chance against the Bulldogs.
