South Carolina football: Bryan Edwards resembling Terrell Owens, Randy Moss
By Jacob Elsey
Bryan Edwards is starting his second NFL training camp this Fall after posting 11 catches for 193 yards in an injury-riddled rookie season. The wideout was taken in the third round of the 2019 draft by the Las Vegas Raiders, and he’s looking to make his mark on a young, but talented receiving corps.
With star tight end Darren Waller out for the Raiders this offseason, some of those young pass catchers are seeing a little more action in the training camp sessions. Edwards, Henry Ruggs, Hunter Renfrow, and Zay Jones are each garnering more opportunities with the season quickly approaching, but one player is standing out to head coach Jon Gruden.
Gruden said in a TV interview with “Back Together Saturday” that Edwards is reminding him of a wideout he faced off against numerous times while coaching in the NFC with Tampa Bay.
"“Bryan Edwards has great ability… I’m excited about him. You see he looks like T.O., he looks like one of the number one wideouts in the league.”"
You heard that right. Edwards is drawing comparisons to one of the best to ever do it at the wide receiver position, Terrell Owens. High praise from a head coach that’s been in the league for more than a decade.
It seems that the expectations are rising for the second year pass catcher out of South Carolina, but Gruden wasn’t the only one excited about Edwards’ abilities heading into the upcoming season. Raiders beat writer Levi Edwards took Gruden’s comparisons to NFL stars a step further, saying that the former Gamecock is looking more like Randy Moss, consistently catching passes with defenders draped all over him.
That praise is getting some folks stirred up about seeing Edwards on the field, including Chad Johnson who says that he’s now “[expletive] excited to see Bryan Edwards.”
The offseason performance shouldn’t come as a shock to South Carolina fans, who had the opportunity to watch Edwards catch passes for four seasons in Columbia. The wideout started 48 games with the Gamecocks between 2016 and 2019, leaving the program as the all-time leader in both yards and receptions. He’ll begin year two in the NFL with a week one matchup against the Ravens on September 13th.
