Former South Carolina football player targeted on social media after swaying recruit to Miami.

South Carolina football is in the midst of a recruiting resurgence, with new head coach Shane Beamer having the latest cycle positioned among the nation’s top 15 classes for 2022. Beamer’s been able to attract a number of highly rated prospects to Columbia, whether it be for official visits or to join the program.

One player that recently listed the Gamecocks as a finalist was defensive back Chris Graves out of Florida. South Carolina was battling Miami and LSU for the four-star prospect’s commitment, which he made public earlier this week on national television. That pledge, unfortunately, went the way of the Hurricanes, who’d long been considered the favorite to land his services.

When asked further about the commitment, a familiar name amongst Gamecock fans was brought up.

Jaycee Horn, a former South Carolina defensive back and first-round selection in the latest NFL Draft, spoke with Graves about his college decision prior to his announcement. Here’s what Graves had to say about Horn’s insight.

"“He’s my favorite corner. He gave me a call… He was telling me how T-Rob made him a better corner [at South Carolina] and I think T-Rob can do the same thing for me.”"

‘T-Rob’ refers to former defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson, who was on staff with Will Muschamp during his time in Columbia. Horn played under the assistant for three seasons, and he attributes much of his success to the coaching he received.

Gamecock fans, however, didn’t take kindly to Horn’s seemingly steering a top recruit to another program as opposed to talking up his alma mater. As is the case with our current generation, folks took to Twitter to display their disgust.

Horn’s reaction was calm, as he mostly brushed off the attacks. He posted a message saying that “people believe anything,” in regards to the situation, and noted that these outsiders didn’t actually have a clue as to what was going on behind closed doors.

Horn later went on to say that the Gamecocks weren’t even in the final conversation for Graves’ commitment, and that it was a race between Miami and LSU. He gave the nod to his former position coach.

It may not have been the best optics to see a former Gamecock pushing a prospect to a different school, especially with how things ended with Horn in Columbia, but an even worse look is attacking a 21-year-old on social media because he still supports his old coach.

Personally, I believe we should thank Jaycee for three fantastic seasons. His promoting the program as a first-round NFL pick will do much more for the future of the football team.
