South Carolina football is in this 4-star DB’s final group.

South Carolina football already has six defensive backs in its 2022 recruiting class, but it’s still chasing a few others. The Gamecocks lost a ton of production from last year’s secondary, resulting in head coach Shane Beamer hitting the trail hard in an effort to refill a relatively bare cupboard.

South Carolina has 10 scholarship players at either corner or safety, and they plan to lose a few of those contributors next year due to graduation. The team landed a couple of players in the transfer portal in Tyrese Ross and Karon Prunty, both of whom will be eligible immediately, but it still leaves a very thin rotation on the back end of the Gamecocks’ defense.

The good news? There could soon be help on the way.

Coach Beamer has the program in position to land a number of highly rated prospects, and he’s just added another to the list.

Four-star defender Tre’Quon Fegans released a top five yesterday that included the Gamecocks, Alabama, Georgia, Miami, and Oklahoma.

Fegans is considered by Rivals to be the nation’s 16th-best cornerback, and the 129th-best player regardless of position. The Alabama native took an official visit to Columbia last month and the trip gave him a new perspective on the South Carolina football program, saying the Gamecocks “most definitely gave themselves a shot” to land his commitment.

Fegans has yet to announce a commitment date, and there hasn’t been much information on which way he could be leaning, but it’s worth noting that he’s only taken official visits to South Carolina and Miami. Obviously, it’s hard to count out the hometown Crimson Tide, too, meaning this is a race that could come down to the very end.
