South Carolina football: ranking potential upsets on the schedule
By Jacob Elsey
2. vs. Auburn
South Carolina took down Auburn last year, shocking the Tigers, 30-22. In a wacky matchup, Auburn outgained the Gamecocks 481-297, but three big interceptions helped South Carolina complete the upset. The Tigers were ranked No. 14 at the time of the victory.
Following the 2020 season, the Tigers let Gus Malzahn go to bring in Bryan Harsin. Harsin pulled offensive coordinator Mike Bobo away from the Gamecocks, and I’m sure that Shane Beamer hasn’t forgotten the hasty departure just days after giving the assistant a contract extension.
This game will feature two of the best running backs in the conference, and it should be a fun one late in the year. A big upset could lead to a bowl appearance, and with the Gamecocks playing in the friendly confines of Williams-Brice Stadium, it’s a game that South Carolina feels it can win.
1. vs. Florida
Florida comes as the Gamecocks’ most likely shot at an upset. The Gators are fresh off of an SEC Championship appearance, but the offensive production from that roster is now gone. Kyle Trask, Kyle Pitts, and Kadarius Toney are all off to the NFL after leading one of the league’s most prolific units.
The game also falls after a bye week for the Gamecocks, while the Gators will be coming to Columbia following its annual Cocktail Party versus Georgia. South Carolina will be looking to end a three-game losing streak to its division foe, and this late season contest could provide a major upset.
