South Carolina football: Shane Beamer hints at new commitments
By Jacob Elsey
Who are South Carolina football’s newest commits?
Every coach and college program has a social media tag used to acknowledge when a prospect commits to come play for their school. In past seasons, the Gamecocks used the #SpursUp hashtag to announce new pledges. Under Shane Beamer, that message has changed to #WelcomeHome, with the head coach posting the quip on Twitter after every South Carolina football commitment.
While these hashtags represent new commitments, they don’t note which prospects are actually making the pledge, allowing those players an opportunity announce their moment to the public, whether that be through videos, picture edits, or simply a written message.
On Wednesday, coach Beamer teased a few new pledges, tweeting out two different #WelcomeHome posts ahead of a major recruiting weekend.
Who could the commitments be?
There will be 12 highly rated prospects on campus, including a current commit in Braden Davis, and a former pledge in Anthony Rose. Could Rose, a four-star safety, be re-joining the ’22 class? Possibly.
There’s also Chris Graves, a defensive back prospect from Florida, who’s planning to announce his commitment in early July. He’ll also be in Columbia this weekend. Did he inform the staff of a pledge prior to his announcement?
The Gamecocks have been after in-state wideout Antonio Williams, who plays ball right down the road at Dutch Fork High. Maybe the local standout decided to pull the trigger. Then there’s Karon Prunty, a defensive transfer from the University of Kansas, who’s deciding this weekend between South Carolina and Tennessee.
And of course, there’s the possibility that it could be someone that’s not necessarily on anyone’s radar.
Our best bet for the next commitment…
We’re thinking one of the slots is for Prunty, who’s deciding this weekend between the Gamecocks and Vols. South Carolina is in dire need of help in the secondary, and this former Freshman All-American can jump in the rotation immediately. Last year with the Jayhawks, Prunty tallied 10 pass breakups and an interception while holding opposing pass catchers to a 38.5% completion rate. With nine starts under his belt, he’d be one of South Carolina’s most experienced players in the defensive backfield.
The second #WelcomeHome is a toss up, but we’ll bet on it being one of the 12 visitors coming in this weekend. Anthony Rose may be a good guess since he’s already been committed once, is familiar with the program, and has recently seen his other top suitor, Arizona State, get into some trouble with the NCAA.
No matter who the next commitments are, you can be sure that Garnet and Cocky will be here to break the news.
