South Carolina football picked up its sixth ’22 commitment.

Shane Beamer has been a busy man this Summer. Since June 1st, the South Carolina football staff has had prospects on campus every day but Father’s Day, hosting highly touted prospects from up and down the East Coast. Despite not having any visitors in Columbia on Sunday, it was was anything but quiet.

Defensive lineman Jamaal Whyce made his pledge to the Gamecocks on Father’s Day, becoming the sixth player in the class. Whyce, a three-star prospect from Miami, chose South Carolina over offers from Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Miami, and Ole Miss, among others.

Whyce becomes the fourth defender in the group of ’22 commits, as Beamer and Co. look to replenish an empty cupboard on that side of the ball. The 6-foot-4 lineman tallied 39 tackles and six sacks as a high school junior at Florida Christian.

South Carolina’s ’22 class projects to have an emphasis on the defensive front four. While the Gamecocks did bring in five lineman in the ’20 class, last year’s cycle consisted of just two, and the roster is set to see some turnover in the coming seasons with upperclassmen moving on to the next level.

The Gamecocks will lose JJ Enagbare, Aaron Sterling, Rick Sandidge, Zachh Pickens, Jabari Ellis, Devontae Davis, Jahkeem Green, and Jordan Strachan over the next two seasons, meaning bringing in a talented group of youngsters will be imperative.

With the commitment, South Carolina’s ’22 class improves to No. 37 in the nation, sandwiched in between West Virginia and Arizona. Coach Beamer will look to keep the momentum going over the coming months with prospects continuing to roll in as the offseason trucks on.
