South Carolina football: ranking the incoming transfers
By Jacob Elsey
No. 8 – Jason Brown
Brown entered the battle for the starting quarterback role this Spring, after enrolling over the offseason. He hails from the same school, St Francis University, as EJ Jenkins, a name already mentioned on this list. The signal caller earned FCS All-America honors last year after leading the Red Flash to a 6-6 season. Three of those six losses took place in overtime.
Brown led the Northeast Conference with 3,084 passing yards and 28 touchdowns. Those marks also set program records, an impressive showing from the first-year starter. He’s still a step behind Luke Doty on the depth chart following the Spring session, which is why he’s a bit lower on this list, but he should continue to fight for playing time in a thin position room.
At the moment, Brown looks to be poised for a reserve role, but should Doty miss any time, the newcomer provides the Gamecocks with another solid option under center.
No. 9 – Tavareon “Bam” Scott
Scott just finished up a seven-game season with Dodge City Community College over the Spring, and is set to join the South Carolina roster before the Gamecocks’ Fall start. The linebacker played in five games with the Conquistadors, recording 15 tackles.
He comes to Columbia as the nation’s seventh-best JUCO prospect, regardless of position, and the second-highest rated inside linebacker. He will have an opportunity to get into the defensive rotation, but it may take a bit longer than others as he’s getting a late start with his new team.
If he’s able to pick up the playbook quickly, he’ll add depth to a linebacking crew that consists of Mohamed Kaba, Rosendo Louis, Damani Staley, Sherrod Greene, Debo Williams, Brad Johnson, and Jahmar Brown.
