South Carolina football: ranking the incoming transfers
By Jacob Elsey
No. 4 – Debo Williams
Williams is technically a transfer even though he’s yet to play a down of college football. The linebacker originally committed to play for his home state Delaware Blue Hens, but when the program shut down their 2020 season, he opted to test the transfer waters. Fellow Delaware native, and new teammate MarShawn Lloyd was instrumental in landing the defender.
Williams has been applauded by his new coaching staff for his intelligence and work ethic. Though he’s just a freshman, he’ll be thrust into a thin linebacking rotation. He may not earn the starting role over key contributors like Mohamed Kaba and Sherrod Greene, but he’s sure to see the field a ton in a reserve role.
The Gamecocks are hoping to see Williams become the leader of the defense in years to come.
No. 5 – David Spaudling
The next three players are essentially interchangeable, but we give David Spaulding the nod at No. 5 due to his experience at the Division I level. Spaulding is a cornerback that played in mostly a reserve role with Georgia Southern last season, but he did make the most of his lone starting opportunity. In that season ending matchup with Appalachian State, the defender tallied four tackles and an interception, which he returned for a score.
Spaulding is looking to improve the depth in a Gamecocks’ secondary that’s replacing its top five contributors from last season. He’ll have a chance to land a starting role at corner alongside Cam Smith, but will have to battle it out with a few other transfers that also land on this list.
