South Carolina football: SEC Championship odds released on WynnBET
By Jacob Elsey
South Carolina football is a longshot to win the SEC.
The South Carolina football team is preparing for its first season under new head coach Shane Beamer, looking to improve upon a 2-8 campaign from a year ago. That 2020 season saw the dismissal of Will Muschamp, an exodus of contributors on the defensive side of the ball, and a sixth placed finish in the SEC Eastern Division standings.
The sportsbooks don’t see the Gamecocks making much of an improvement in 2021 judging by the recent release of their SEC Championship projections. WynnBET has pegged the program at +7500 odds to win the conference. Those odds rank as the league’s second worst, tied with Arkansas and Mississippi State, and ahead of only Vanderbilt.
Should the Gamecocks somehow take home the conference title for the first time in program history, a $100 bet would yield a $7,500 return. That’s a hefty payout, for sure, but a huge risk as well.

- Alabama +120
- Georgia +325
- Texas A&M +750
- LSU +1100
- Florida +1200
- Auburn +1700
- Missouri +1700
- Ole Miss +2500
- Tennessee +3000
- Kentucky +4000
- Arkansas +7500
- Mississippi State +7500
- South Carolina +7500
- Vanderbilt +15000
It’s no surprise that the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs sit atop the standings. Alabama is fresh off of another national championship, while Georgia may have the best quarterback and defense in the league.
The Gamecocks do have some playmakers on offense, most notably the SEC’s leading returning rusher Kevin Harris and dual threat signal caller Luke Doty. An experienced offensive line should help fuel a physical ground game, but the coaching staff needs to figure out who Doty will be throwing the ball to on the outside.
On defense, South Carolina should be able to pressure opposing quarterbacks, but there are major question marks at linebacker and in the secondary. The Gamecocks lost nearly all of its production from last year’s unit, including first round pick Jaycee Horn and leading tackler Ernest Jones. Finding replacements with a thin roster will be a tall task.
While there is a possibility that the Gamecocks will exceed expectations in 2021, laying a bet on South Carolina to win an SEC title is foolish.
