UK defensive end Josh Paschal tackles South Carolina quarterback Luke Doty during the University of Kentucky football game against South Carolina at Kroger Field in Lexington, Kentucky, on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2020.Kentucky Football South Carolina /

LUKE DOTY IS THE STARTING QB

Doty has been the leader in the clubhouse all Spring, and that will continue throughout the rest of the offseason. After taking nearly all of the reps with the first-team, Doty has separated himself from backups Colten Gauthier, Jason Brown, and Connor Jordan.

Here’s what coach Beamer said about his signal caller after the game.

"“Unless something totally changes between now and when we watch the tape, Luke Doty is our starting quarterback.”"

Doty threw for 54 yards on 5-of-7 passing, leading the offense on two scoring drives. It was a solid performance, especially when considering that he couldn’t display all of his athleticism in scramble situations with quarterbacks sporting non-contact jerseys.

Brown, a transfer from St Francis, looked good, too, but apparently not good enough to unseat Doty atop the leaderboard. The passer completed 3-of-5 passes for 47 yards and a score. True freshman Gauthier was 1-for-3, and the walk-on, Jordan, was 1-for-1 on the day.

Doty will need to continue to perform throughout Summer and Fall if he hopes to hold onto the starting role, but for now, he seems safe. His athletic abilities are evident, as well as his work ethic and leadership. He’ll need to improve upon his passing accuracy and pocket presence, but he should be able to provide the offense with a spark as he builds upon the experience gained in his freshman season.
