South Carolina football: Alfonzo Allen sets commitment date
By Jacob Elsey
South Carolina football hopes to add a second member to the class of 2022.
The South Carolina football program is gearing up for the start of spring practice, but that doesn’t mean things have slowed down on the recruiting trail. Shane Beamer and the Gamecock coaching staff have already secured the commitment of one player, defensive back Anthony Rose from Hallandale High School down in Florida.
On Saturday, they’ll hope to add the pledge of his current teammate and fellow secondary member Alfonzo Allen, Jr.
Allen will be announcing his college commitment tomorrow at 3 PM on his Instagram Live account.
The four-star prospect recently released a top 12, which included the Gamecocks, Southern Cal, Central Florida, Arizona State, South Florida, UAB, Florida State, Texas A&M, Clemson, LSU, Alabama, and Miami.
Allen is considered by Rivals to be the 175th best player in the country, as well as the 13th best safety and 21st best prospect in the Sunshine State. And while he’s received offers from more than 50 schools around the nation, he’s played his recruitment close to the vest, giving no clear indication of which program he’s leaning to most heavily.
The Gamecocks certainly have a chance, though. South Carolina can offer Allen early playing time in the SEC, close proximity to home, and a chance to join his high school teammate (A. Rose).
The defensive backfield is in desperate need for playmakers, with the team losing its top five contributors from a season ago. Jaycee Horn and Israel Mukuamu are off to the NFL, while Jammie Robinson, Shilo Sanders, and John Dixon opted to leave the program following Will Muschamp’s firing.
Landing a top-200 player at a position of need would be a great start to the recruiting cycle for Shane Beamer and the South Carolina football staff.
