South Carolina football: Gamecocks trending for former Tennessee commit
By Jacob Elsey
South Carolina football is picking up steam on the recruiting trail.
Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt, along with nine assistants, was let go yesterday amid recruiting allegations within the Volunteer program. Allegations stem from an internal investigation, and seem to circle around the notion that the Volunteer coaching staff was handing out McDonald’s bags full of cash to visiting recruits.
As the Gamecocks saw just a few months ago, a coaching change can have a significant impact on the incoming recruiting class. South Carolina lost more than half of its ’21 class following Will Muschamp’s being let go, but now it has an opportunity to capitalize on the misfortunes of its SEC East brethren.
Four-star wide receiver Jordan Mosley is trending to the Gamecocks according to 247 Sports. The Alabama native decommitted from the Tennessee recruiting class on January 18th, and will reopen his recruitment ahead of the February signing date.
Mosley is considered to be the 38th best wideout in the country and the 11th best prospect in the Yellowhammer State. He tallied 45 catches for 450 yards and six touchdowns last season.
Here’s what recruiting analyst Barton Simmons had to say about the talented pass catcher.
"Sub six foot wide receiver that has the look of a slot but has versatility to play on the outside as well. Has verified track speed that shows up in straightline situations. Has good kick return value. Can run by cornerbacks on the outside. Good ball skills and can win contested balls despite size limitations. Shows quickness in his release. Very good run after catch talent that is used in a variety of ways. Primarily a straight-line athlete. Lateral agility and route-running are questions. Future Power Five starter that has the athleticism to project to a late round NFL Draft prospect."
Simmons compares Mosley to former Gamecock star and current Carolina Panther Pharoh Cooper.
One positive to note in Mosley’s recruitment, from a South Carolina standpoint, is his primary recruiter and possible position coach. New wide receivers coach Justin Stepp was the lead recruiter for Mosely while he was at Arkansas, finishing runner-up to the Volunteers for Mosley’s commitment.
Stepp joined the Gamecock staff earlier this month, and would seem to have an early advantage over his competition due to the relationship built with Mosley over the last few months. Should South Carolina land a commitment from the wideout, it would give the roster an immediate player at a position of need.
South Carolina football also trending for JUCO defender.
The Gamecocks are also picking up some momentum with Monroe Community College defensive end Jimmori Robinson. The 6-foot-6 pass rusher holds offers from Auburn, Arizona State, Bowling Green, Coastal Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Southern Mississippi, Syracuse, UT San Antonio, andTexas Tech. He’s also gotten some interest from Florida State, North Carolina, Texas, and Virginia Tech, though they’ve yet to extend a scholarship offer.
Robinson rates as a top 20 JUCO prospect, as well as the third best defensive end in the junior college ranks.
Prior to attending Monroe Community College, Robinson played a season at Dodge City Community College in Kansas. He tallied 20 tackles, with 10 coming behind the line of scrimmage, for the Conquistadors. Monroe has suspended its 2020 season to the spring of 2021.
Robinson could factor into the rotation at outside linebacker or defensive end should he decide to sign with the Gamecocks.
