The South Carolina football team gets more depth at DL.

Over the weekend, former Nebraska defensive tackle Jahkeem Green quietly signed his paperwork to play for his hometown program in the 2021 season. Green, originally from Sumter, SC, will have two years of eligibility remaining.

The signing comes as great news for Shane Beamer and the South Carolina football team, as they continue to build depth on a defense that’s lost a total of eight contributors over the offseason.

Green started his career at Highland Community College, where he developed into a top JUCO prospect. He tallied 117 tackles in two seasons with the Scotties, and was viewed as a four-star talent in the class of 2019. Green originally committed to play for the Gamecocks following that two-year stint, but retracted that commitment and signed with Nebraska.

The interior lineman would redshirt in 2019, appearing in only three games, before seeing action in five games throughout the 2020 campaign. The 6-foot-5, 320-pounder picked up four tackles in those eight games of action.

With COVID affecting the 2020 season, the year won’t count against Green in terms of his eligibility. He will be immediately available for the Gamecocks in 2021.

Green adds experience to a defensive line unit that continues to be the Gamecocks’ deepest and most talented on that side of the ball. He could immediately factor into the nose tackle rotation in new coordinator Clayton White’s 4-2-5 scheme. The big man could turn out to be a great space eater, taking on double team assignments to create opportunities for guys at the second level.

With the addition, the Gamecocks have now picked up five transfers this offseason, four of whom play on the defensive side of the football. Green joins wideout Ahmarean Brown (Georgia Tech), linebacker Darryl Williams (Delaware), cornerback David Spaulding (Georgia Southern), and defensive end Jordan Strachan (Georgia State).

Shane Beamer has also picked up commitments from JUCO defensive backs Marcellas Dial and Isaiah Norris, both of whom played for the Georgia Military College last season.
