South Carolina football: the Luke Doty era has officially begun
By Jacob Elsey
Toughness
Doty is a big bodied passer, carrying a 210-pound frame. He isn’t afraid to take a hit, or seek out contact. Doty is the type of player that’s going to fight for that crucial first down late in the game, rather than slide or scamper out of bounds. It’s part of his mentality.
That toughness isn’t limited to physical ability, though. He’s a mentally tough kid who took everything in stride this season, never losing his confidence despite playing his final two games of the year with essentially half a team. He has the mindset you want to see in your team leader.
Athleticism
Doty’s athleticism was a talking point all offseason, as then head coach Will Muschamp actually had the quarterback taking reps at wide receiver. Doty even cracked the two-deep, though he never hauled in a pass.
That athleticism is what earned him a four-star rating coming out of high school, and got him early playing time in his freshman year at Carolina. When attitude and athleticism are used together, you get plays like the one below.
Doty provides a component to the Gamecock offense that no other quarterback on the roster possesses. He can avoid the pass rush, extend plays, and give opposing defenses an extra player to account for.
