South Carolina football: Gamecocks land transfer at position of need
By Jacob Elsey
Transfer wideout to join South Carolina football.
South Carolina’s roster for 2021 is very limited at the wide receiver position. Leading pass catcher Shi Smith is off to the NFL after hauling in 57 passes for 633 yards. He was easily the Gamecocks’ most dynamic playmaker at the position, and accounted for over 60% of the production from the group.
Remaining wideouts on the team combined for just 40 receptions and 400 yards.
Luckily, it looks like the wide receiver room will get some immediate help, as Georgia Tech pass catcher Ahmarean Brown announced his intention to transfer to South Carolina for the upcoming season.
Brown has been with the Yellow Jackets for two seasons now, becoming a big play threat in Atlanta by averaging more than 18 yards a catch in his young career. As a freshman, he burst onto the scene, making an instant impact with 21 receptions for 396 yards and a team-leading seven touchdown catches. He saw a bit of a dip in his sophomore season, recording 12 catches for 223 yards in eight games.
The Tampa native was considered a three-star prospect coming out of high school, committing to Georgia Tech over offers from Alabama, Michigan, Virginia Tech, and more. His recruitment ultimately came down to Iowa State, Minnesota, and the Yellow Jackets, with the 5-foot-10 speedster opting for Atlanta over his other two finalists.
With the addition, South Carolina gets an experienced contributor at a position of need. Behind Shi Smith, the Gamecocks’ leading receivers consisted of a tight end and two running backs. No wideout made any notable contribution. Transfer Jalen Brooks caught 11 passes for 100 yards. Josh Vann totaled 10 catches for 88 yards. No other wide receiver reached double digit receptions.
The Gamecocks likely aren’t done recruiting the position, as Shane Beamer is expected to hit the transfer portal hard in the coming months to fill out a class that’s only about half full at the moment.
He’s off to a good start, though, landing a slot receiver with speed. Brown should see the field early and often in the 2021 season.
