Shane Beamer will be South Carolina football’s next head coach.

News broke on Saturday that South Carolina football will be hiring Oklahoma assistant Shane Beamer as its next head coach, bringing what’s been a three week search to a close. Will Muschamp was fired on November 15th following a 59-42 loss to Ole Miss.

Athletic director Ray Tanner had this to say about Beamer’s return to Columbia to lead the Gamecock program.

"“I believe that Shane Beamer is the perfect fit to be the head football coach at the University of South Carolina. He has worked under some of the greatest coaches in college football and has taken those lessons to become one of the bright, young minds in the game. I believe Shane’s energy, enthusiasm, commitment and fondness for our school and program will be met favorably by our student-athletes, staff and fans.”"

Beamer has long been the perceived leader in the clubhouse despite not having any prior head coaching experience. The Charleston, SC native was able to leverage his recruiting ties and ability to hire a homerun staff to beat out a short list that included Louisville’s Scott Satterfield, Louisiana’s Billy Napier, and Coastal Carolina’s Jamey Chadwell.

Beamer has been an assistant on some of the most successful staffs in college football over the years, having coached with Steve Spurrier, George O’Leary, Lincoln Riley, and Frank Beamer. In his 21 seasons as a coach, Beamer’s teams have been to 17 bowl games, including a Championship Game appearance with Georgia in 2018.

Here’s what the Gamecocks’ new leader had to say about his winning the job.

"“I have been preparing for this moment my entire life. I am ready and excited to be the head football coach at the University of South Carolina. I am thankful to all the head coaches that I have worked for, the assistant coaches and student-athletes I have worked with. My family and I are thrilled to be coming back to Columbia and the state of South Carolina.”"

Now in his second stint with South Carolina, Beamer seems to be the right “fit” as the program looks to change the culture and get back to the success seen in the early 2010s. Many former Gamecocks, including DJ Swearinger, Melvin Ingram, and Marcus Lattimore came out to show their support for Beamer throughout the coaching search.

The new head coach will be expected to jump right in and hit the recruiting trail, as South Carolina looks to salvage the 2021 recruiting class. He’ll also need to assemble a staff, and lure some top assistants to Columbia. The coaching search may be over, but Beamer’s job is just beginning.
