Top DE has South Carolina football in top 6.

South Carolina football received a bit of good news on the recruiting trail Tuesday as four-star defensive end Deonte Anderson included the Gamecocks in his top six schools. Anderson made the announcement on Twitter, with a note that read Top  6… RESPECT MY DECISION…

It appears as though the Gamecocks will go head to head with Central Florida, Gerogia Tech, Mississippi State, Nebraska, and Penn State for Anderson’s services. The defender from Fort Meade High School is rated by 247 Sports as the 14th best defensive end prospect, and the 202nd best player in the nation, regardless of position. His recruitment to the Gamecocks is being led by defensive line coach Tracy Rocker.

South Carolina offered way back in March, Anderson’s first from an SEC school. Mike Leach and the Bulldogs offered soon after.

Here’s what recruiting analyst Andrew Ivins had to say about Anderson.

"A long-limbed frame with an impressive reach. On the lighter side due to basketball background, but should be able to tack on pounds once working with a college strength coach. One of the more imposing pass rushers in the Sunshine State this cycle given explosive first step and ability to bend. Launches out of his stance and doesn’t give his target much time to escape. Effective with his hands. Hasn’t been asked to cover much, but doubles as a tight end on offense and is athletic enough to get open on a regular basis. Will need time to develop some more pass rushing moves and get stronger across the board. Also needs to get better at breaking down and dropping ball carriers. Has the looks of a prospect that will be a multi-year contributor on the defensive line. NFL upside given natural length."

Ivins even compared Anderson to former Gamecock and All-SEC performer DJ Wonnum, who’s now in his rookie season with the Minnesota Vikings.

This news comes as a good sign for a South Carolina recruiting class that’s suffered a handful of defects following the firing of Will Muschamp. Stay tuned to Garnet and Cocky for future updates in Anderson’s recruitment.
