South Carolina football loses top commitment of 2021 class.

South Carolina has been hit hard on the recruiting front, with five players electing to reopen their recruitment following the firing of head coach Will Muschamp. Wednesday night, they lost a sixth, though this player has already found another landing spot.

Four-star defender Trenilyas Tatum pulled his pledge to the Gamecocks Wednesday evening, announcing that he’d flipped his commitment to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Tatum was the top prospect in the South Carolina class, being rated as the 25th best outside linebacker in the country, according to 247 Sports.

Tatum made his announcement on Twitter with a note to both his former and current schools.

"“First off I would like to thank Will Muschamp and the rest of the staff for believing in me and giving me an opportunity. I also want to thank all the South Carolina fans that treated me like family. After having long talks with my family we think it’s best that I decommit from the University of South Carolina. I wish the best for the University of South Carolina.”"

The note ended with a picture of Tatum in a Yellow Jacket uniform and caption that read #4the404. The ‘404’ is the Atlanta area code.

The Georgia native originally made his pledge to the Gamecocks in April, being one of the first players in the class. He chose South Carolina over offers from Arkansas, Colorado, Louisville, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and, of course, Georgia Tech.

With Tatum’s decommitment, the Gamecocks’ class falls to 91st in the country, and remains dead last in the Southeastern Conference. Ten commits remain the fold, though more could follow suit as the school searches for its new head coach.
