South Carolina football: George Wilson decommits from Gamecocks

South Carolina football lost another player in its 2021 recruiting class.
Virginia Beach defensive end George Wilson has decommitted from the University of South Carolina, becoming the fifth member of the 2021 recruiting class to reopen his recruitment. The news comes less than two weeks from Will Muschamp’s firing in Columbia.
Wilson announced the news on Instagram with a note to the school that he’d originally pledged to.
"First and foremost, I want to thank the man above for even putting me in this situation. I want to thank coach Muschamp and the South Carolina family for recruiting me and giving me a chance to play on the next level. This has been a tough decision and not an easy one to make, but as it gets closer and closer, and talking it over with my family, as well as taking time out for myself, I’ve decided to decommit from the University of South Carolina…. I’m looking to sign on the early signing period in December to my new home for the next 3-4 years. Let’s get it done. (My recruitment is 100% open)."
Wilson is considered a four-star prospect by 247 Sports, being rated as the 187th best player in the nation, as well as the 12th best defensive end in the country.
He had originally chosen to play for the Gamecocks in the summer, making his pledge in mid July. He picked South Carolina over offers from Maryland, North Carolina, Penn State, Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Pitt, Syracuse, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.
With the departure, South Carolina’s class falls to just 11 members, and ranks 14th in the Southeastern Conference.
