South Carolina football’s signal caller played well in the loss to Florida.
We’re now two weeks through the SEC season, and 247Sports has continued its rankings of the league’s 14 quarterbacks based on their on-field production. Last week, we saw Florida’s Kyle Trask and Mississippi State’s KJ Costello at the top of the list. While Trask retained a hold on one of the top two spots, there were some shakeups from that point on.
One of those movers was Alabama’s Mac Jones, who leapfrogged everyone in the conference, on his way to the No. 1 ranking. Pretty impressive for a player that many expected to be unseated by incoming freshman Bryce Young.
Costello took a step back following Mississippi State’s loss to Arkansas. Georgia’s Stetson Bennett continues to impress, and he now has a top 10 win under his belt. He’s got the Dawgs sitting at 2-0 on the young season and landed at the No. 4 spot after last week’s performance.
The surprise of the bunch has to be Auburn’s Bo Nix, who came in as one of the league’s potential breakout candidates, but who now sits at No. 12 in the conference rankings after two subpar outings. The Gamecocks will take on the Tigers in week 4.
As for South Carolina signal caller Collin Hill, his rating remained constant, as he held steady at No. 8 following a sharp performance in Gainesville. Hill went toe-to-toe with Kyle Trask, throwing for 212 yards and two touchdowns.
His stat line could’ve been much more impressive had the South Carolina receivers not suffered a case of the drops. The team tallied six of them on the day. Even so, Hill was able to lead his team to more first downs (25) than the prolific Florida offense (18), while avoiding any costly turnovers. Hill currently ranks sixth in the league in passing with 502 yards.
Here’s what 247Sports beat writer Brad Crawford had to say about Hill thus far.
"The numbers won’t jump off the page, but if you’ve watched South Carolina this season, Hill has been arguably the Gamecocks’ best player and has given first-year OC Mike Bobo’s scheme a chance to succeed. This team is extremely thin at the wideout spot, evidenced by Shi Smith’s SEC-leading totals in catches (22) and targets, but Hill has made the most of his lack of options averaging 251 yards per game. Coach Will Muschamp raved about Hill’s leadership and poise following Saturday’s loss at Florida. The Gamecocks’ six drops damaged Hill’s efficiency numbers."
If he continues to play smart, mistake-free football, while also getting a little help from his teammates, he will keep the Gamecocks in position to win more games than not as the season wears on.
