Where did the South Carolina football team’s signal caller land on the list?

The first week of the year saw some great performances from SEC signal callers, including a record setting day from a newcomer in Starkville. Of the league’s 14 starting quarterbacks, nine threw for 200 yards or more. The Georgia Bulldogs also got a 200-yard game, albeit from a reserve in Stetson Bennett, who took over for struggling freshman D’Wan Mathis in Georgia’s win over Arkansas.

247Sports recently ranked the performances of each SEC quarterback in their 2020 debuts. Not surprisingly, Florida passer Kyle Trask topped the list after throwing for six touchdowns in the Gators’ opening day win against Ole Miss, though a case can be made for Mississippi State’s KJ Costello, who tallied an SEC record 623 passing yards in the Bulldogs’ upset of defending champion LSU. Trask is the next quarterback on the schedule for the Gamecocks as they’ll attempt to slow down a powerful Florida offense.

As for South Carolina starter Collin Hill, he played sufficiently in his first ever game in Columbia, throwing for 290 yards and a score. He currently sits at fifth in the league in passing yards, and the output was more than Gamecock quarterbacks threw for in all but three games last season. He did throw a costly interception, which was returned for a touchdown, but his overall performance gave Gamecock fans something to look forward to.

The debut was good enough for Hill to earn the No. 8 spot on the list, just behind his opening day counterpart, Jarrett Guarantano. Had it not been for a misplayed punt with less than two minutes remaining, Hill could’ve been rated higher. Hill seemed positioned to lead the Gamecocks down the field for a winning score, but instead the Vols fell on the muffed kick and ran out the clock.

Hill’s next matchup will come against a Florida defense that allowed over 600 yards to Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels. The Gators will obviously try to shore up some things in the secondary, but should Hill start to get in a groove, he’ll have a chance to move up this list ahead of week three.
