South Carolina football: Bryan Edwards making mark in the NFL
By Jacob Elsey
Former South Carolina football player Bryan Edwards is making an impact in the NFL.
Rookie wide receiver Bryan Edwards’ name was trending on Twitter last night. The former Gamecock may now be in line for a starting role with the Raiders after the team learned that Tyrell Williams will be missing the season with a torn labrum.
Edwards had already moved up the depth chart following an impressive offseason, but this now solidifies his role as a starting wideout on the Raider offense. He could team up with fellow rookie Henry Ruggs III in the Las Vegas opening day lineup. Other pass catchers on the roster include former Clemson wideout Hunter Renfrow, who figures to play in the slot, Nelson Agholor, and rookie Lynn Bowden, Jr.

Edwards was chosen in the with the 17th pick of the third round (81st overall) in the latest NFL draft after a productive career with the Gamecocks. He left Columbia as the school’s all-time leading receiver, totaling 234 catches for 3,045 yards and 22 touchdowns. As a senior, the Conway native caught a career best 71 receptions, turning them into 816 yards and six scores. He earned all-conference honors, and finished his career with the third-most receptions in SEC history.

Now, he looks to continue that production in Las Vegas. The Raiders were lacking pass catchers a season ago, which explains why they selected three wideouts over their first four picks in the latest draft. Recent fantasy outlooks project the rookie receiver to rack up 700 yards and a handful of touchdowns in the upcoming year. Time will tell, but for now, Edwards looks like he’ll be one of the top options in the John Gruden’s offense.
