A member of the South Carolina football team has put his name in the transfer portal.

Redshirt freshman Tyquan Johnson has decided to move on from the South Carolina football team, after spending two seasons with the program. The wide receiver voiced his decision to head coach Will Muschamp earlier this week.

Johnson, a native of Sylvania, Ga., was originally a member of a Gamecocks’ 2018 recruiting class that ranked 18th in the country. After failing to be admitted to the university, he opted to spend a season at Fork Union Military Academy.

Johnson was able to reclassify following his year in prep school, and, again, signed with the Gamecocks, but this time as a member in the 2019 recruiting class.

The 6’3” pass catcher took a redshirt season in his first year on campus, unable to crack into the wide receiver rotation as a freshman. He did not appear in any games and recorded no stats. He leaves ahead of the start of his second year.

With the departure, the Gamecocks take a hit in an already thin wide receiver room. Shi Smith appears to be in line for the No. 1 role, but the roster is largely unsettled beyond that point. Xavier Legette, Josh Vann, OrTre Smith, and Randrecous Davis return with much to prove. The three pass catchers in the latest recruiting class will also look to make an impact.

Former quarterback Dakereon Joyner has made the move to receiver, after splitting time between the two positions last season. Incoming freshman signal caller Luke Doty has also taken some reps at wideout.

Johnson moves on just as the South Carolina football team begins fall practice. He has not yet announced where he intends to continue his collegiate career.
