The South Carolina football program is still in the running for the commitment of 2022 quarterback Gunner Stockton.

Class of 2022 quarterback Gunner Stockton has revealed the top two finalists in his recruitment, and the Gamecocks made the final cut. The hometown Georgia Bulldogs will compete with South Carolina to earn Stockton’s commitment as the recruiting process plays out.

Stockton broke the news via Twitter, with a message that read:

"Want to thank my family, my teammates, my coaches and every school that has recruited me for the last two years. With that being said I am down to my final two schools, so I can focus on my junior season at Rabun County. Please no interviews at this time. Thank you and God Bless!"

The dual-threat signal caller is considered a five-star prospect, according to 247Sports, and the top player at his position. He’s ranked as the 32nd best recruit in the nation, and the fourth best player in the Peach State.

Should Stockton decide to pledge a commitment to the Gamecocks, he’d become the top-rated quarterback commit in program history, surpassing Stephen Garcia. South Carolina is currently the favorite, with the Gamecocks receiving 100% of the predictions on 247Sports.

The Georgia native attributes his choosing the Gamecocks as a finalist to his close relationships with both the Bobo and Shaw families. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo’s father has been involved in Stockton’s development on the football field since his youth, while Connor Shaw, the Gamecocks’ director of student-athlete development, has been a longtime role model to the young quarterback.

Stockton has also begun to build a relationship with Will Muschamp, and has enjoyed spending time around the program. He’s been to campus on at least two occasions over the last two years, unofficially visiting back in March of 2019 before attending South Carolina’s junior day this past January.

Stockton has not yet set a decision date, but the Gamecocks have to feel good about where they stand. Should he pull the trigger, it would be a huge win on the recruiting trail over a division rival. Stockton would become the fourth five-star pledge of the Will Muschamp era.
