South Carolina football: 3 questions at the quarterback position
By Jacob Elsey
3. HOW DOES RYAN HILINSKI PROGRESS?
Assuming, for now, that Hilinski gets the opening day start, how does he progress throughout the season? He ended last year with a stat line of 2,357 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and just five interceptions.
As mentioned before, he showed flashes of great production at times last year, but, too often, failed to match it game-in and game-out. He was instrumental in the Gamecocks’ upset win over Georgia, but also threw crucial pick sixes in losses against Missouri and App State.
Will he be able to clean up the up-and-down play in 2020?
The hope is that a new play caller will be able to put the California native in a better position to succeed, and find a philosophy to get pass catchers open in space. Mike Bobo has a history of coaching great quarterback, evidenced by his work with former Georgia passers David Greene, Matthew Stafford, and Aaron Murray.
Can he have the same effect on Ryan Hilinski? Time will tell.
