South Carolina football: Gamecocks add four-star defensive lineman George Wilson
By Jacob Elsey
The South Carolina football team picked up its 15th pledge for the class of 2021.
The Gamecocks picked up their 15th verbal commitment for the class of 2021 today, following an announcement from Virginia Beach defensive end George Wilson. Wilson, a four-star prospect according to 247Sports, made his commitment on CBS Sports Headquarters earlier this afternoon.
The 6’5” lineman is considered to be a top 200 prospect, and the 7th best player in the state of Virginia. He chooses the University of South Carolina over his other three finalists, Arizona State, North Carolina, and Penn State. He also garners offers from Georgia Tech, Maryland, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, Virginia, and Virginia Tech.
Wilson projects to play at the BUCK position in Will Muschamp’s defense, an edge rusher that’s a bit of a mix between an outside linebacker and defensive end. Current BUCKs on the roster include senior Brad Johnson, redshirt freshman Rodricus Fitten, true freshman Jordan Burch, and walk-on Donovan Wirt. Four-year starter DJ Wonnum is off the NFL after being selected by the Minnesota Vikings earlier this year.
What that means is Wilson will have a great opportunity to make an immediate impact. When he arrives to campus, he could be competing with only Fitten and Burch, as Johnson and Wirt are both in their final years of eligibility.
Wilson’s pledge is huge for the Gamecocks, as he becomes the top-rated player in the class, just edging out four-star linebacker Trenilyas Tatum. He’s the second member of the class to hail from the state of Virginia, and the sixth commit to play on the defensive side of the football.
With the verbal, the South Carolina recruiting class moves up to 34th-best in the country, positioned between Arkansas and Memphis.
