South Carolina Football: Six Best Wins of the Decade
By Jacob Elsey
MISSOURI 2013
In 2013, South Carolina came into Columbia, MO to take on the fifth-ranked Missouri Tigers. Undefeated and looking for an SEC championship appearance, the Tigers were confident.
They’d jump out to a 17-0 lead, as nothing was going right for South Carolina starter Dylan Thompson. The Gamecocks had turned the ball over three times, once inside the Missouri two-yard line.
With little working for the offense, coach Steve Spurrier decided to turn to Connor Shaw for the final period. Shaw had been injured the week prior, and was not expected to even suit up. Now, he was being thrust into action.
Shaw would lead the Gamecocks to three fourth-quarter scores as South Carolina tied the game at 17-17, sending the contest to overtime.
Both teams would score in the first overtime period, with Shaw throwing a fourth-down touchdown pass to keep the game alive. The Gamecocks kicked on their next possession to give South Carolina a 27-24 lead. A Missouri touchdown could’ve ended the game, but the Gamecock defense stood tall, stopping the Tigers inside the 10-yard line, setting up the game tying field goal attempt.
Missouri kicker Andrew Baggett clanked the kick off the upright and the Gamecocks escaped COMO with a road win against a top 5 opponent.
