South Carolina Football: Five Worst Losses of the Decade
By Jacob Elsey
TENNESSEE 2013
The Auburn loss hurt, but the ’13 defeat at the hands of the Tennessee Volunteers is the worst loss of the decade. The Gamecocks had no business losing to a Tennessee team that finished the year with just one other win over a Power 5 school.
After sleepwalking through a first half that saw Connor Shaw toss his only interception of the season, South Carolina would gain a 21-17 lead in the third quarter. However, the Gamecocks would be held scoreless in the game’s final period and the Volunteers would kick a game-winning field goal as time expired. Marquez North’s one-handed catch to set up the winning score still haunts Gamecock fans to this day.
Had South Carolina won, a trip to Atlanta would’ve been in order as the Gamecocks won their final five games of the regular season. Instead, Missouri would represent the East in the SEC title game. South Carolina would finish the season ranked fourth in the final AP poll, but had the Gamecocks pulled out the win over Tennessee, it could’ve ended with much, much more.
