The South Carolina basketball team picked up a commitment from a local guard prospect over the weekend.
Jacobi Wright of Greenville, SC pledged his commitment to Frank Martin and the Gamecocks over the weekend. He made the announcement public by posting on his Twitter page. He becomes the second member of the 2021 recruiting class, joining Miami shooting guard Devin Carter.
Wright chose the Gamecocks over offers from Charlotte, College of Charleston, DePaul, Elon, and Winthrop. He’s rated by 247Sports as a three-star prospect and the 191st best player in the 2021 class. He ranks as the nation’s 22nd best player at his position and the 6th best basketballer in the state of South Carolina.
The combo guard attended Legacy Charter High School last season, where he put up 17.4 points per game, while also dishing out an average of 5.3 assists a contest. One of his former teammates is South Carolina forward Jalyn McCreary.
Wright joins a deep position group that includes AJ Lawson, Trae Hannibal, Jermaine Couisnard, TJ Moss, and graduate transfer Seventh Woods. But with Woods moving on after this season, and Lawson a possible early NBA draft entry, Wright may have an opportunity to contribute as soon as he arrives to campus.
With the commitment, the South Carolina class moves up to 1st in the SEC and 10th nationally. The Gamecocks are currently the only team in the conference with a pledge from multiple recruits. Head coach Frank Martin will look to lock down the state and close out the class strong as they pursue local targets John Butler and Cesare Edwards.
